Kakamega Hospital CEO Josephat Ouma Omoto in Court Over Multi-Million SHA Fraud

NAIROBI, Kenya - Drama unfolded today at the Milimani Law Courts where a top hospital director from Western Kenya was put on the dock over allegations of orchestrating a multi-million shilling scheme to swindle the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Josephat Ouma Omoto, the big man in charge of Zion Ahadi Hospital in Kakamega County, found himself facing the full force of the law. The prosecution told the court that this one was a proper plan to eat public money meant for the sick.

According to the charge sheet read in court, Josephat Omoto is accused of using his hospital to cook up medical claims and present fake health documents to the SHA. The aim? To illegally pocket a cool Sh2.5 million from the public coffers.

"A very clever scheme to defraud the public through false pretences," the prosecutor told the Honourable Magistrate.

The man is staring at several serious charges. First, they have booked him for obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code. On top of that, he is charged with falsifying health documents as per the SHA Act. But wait, there's more. The state has also slapped him with charges under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act for allegedly acquiring and using the stolen money.

When asked to plead, Josephat Omoto, standing in the dock, was firm. "It is not true," he told the court, denying all the charges.

The prosecution, however, was not having any of it. They strongly opposed his release on bail, arguing that he is a man of means and a flight risk who could interfere with witnesses.

After listening to both sides, the Magistrate ordered that Josephat Omoto be remanded at the Industrial Area Prison until next week. The case will be mentioned again on Monday, January 12, 2026, when a ruling on whether he will be released on bail or bond will be delivered.

This case is being watched keenly by many, coming at a time when the government is putting a strong focus on cleaning up the health sector and protecting public funds. Kenyans on social media are already talking, with many saying this should be a warning shot to all those planning to misuse the new social health funds.

We'll be following this story closely. Stay tuned for updates.
