Airtel Africa Partners With SpaceX to Bring Starlink Direct Satellite Connectivity to 14 Markets

Satellite-Airtel – Airtel Africa has announced a strategic partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to deploy Starlink pioneering direct-to-cell satellite technology across 14 African markets.

The landmark deal aims to provide seamless mobile connectivity to customers in the most remote and underserved regions of the continent, directly through low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Airtel Africa confirmed that the satellite-to-mobile service is scheduled to begin in 2026.The rollout will start with text messaging and data services for selected applications, laying the groundwork for future expansion to broader data and voice services. This technology is designed to function as a complement to existing terrestrial mobile networks, filling critical coverage gaps.

Customers in areas with little or no traditional network coverage will be able to connect directly to Starlink satellites using their existing smartphones.
The service promises to provide “true cellular roaming” from space, eliminating the need for specialized ground equipment at the user's location.

How To Know If Your Phone Is Compatible?
Currently, standard smartphones are not equipped to connect directly to LEO satellites like Starlink.
For the service to work, devices require specific hardware (a modified cellular radio chipset).

Here is what you need to know about compatibility:

(i) Future smartphone models released in the coming years will increasingly be built with this capability. Manufacturers like Apple (iPhone 14/15 series for emergency SOS), Google, and Samsung have begun integrating satellite connectivity features.

(ii) The direct-to-cell technology relies on standards-based 4G LTE. Compatibility will depend on whether a phone's modem can be updated or is designed to communicate with the specific bands used by Starlink’s satellites.
(ii) Since the service starts in 2026, the ecosystem of compatible devices is expected to grow significantly by then. Airtel Africa will likely provide a list of supported devices closer to the launch date.
(iii) Check Official Sources: When available, the definitive list of compatible phones will be announced by Airtel Africa and Starlink. Customers should monitor official channels for updates.
